<span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I started this little series of paintings back in May. Since then they have sat around in various places, almost complete but not quite. I finally got around to finishing them off this week and listing them in my </span></span><a href="https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/485130177/original-still-life-acrylic-painting?ref=shop_home_active_5" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Etsy shop!</span></span></a><br />

<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I started these paintings at the end of May, which is a hectic month for me so I was looking for something calm and zen to paint. Succulents caught my attention beca<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">use there are so many different ki<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">nds and they are so individual and uniqu<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">e</span>. I'm generally not a huge fan of painting s<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">till life's but every so often I enjoy a little experiment.</span></span></span> </span></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDH8hv-lq3CdaqKQ8yXOXD9LbxiP1ogpb9PlHxIxwhQpjCmXsKNDFAAd0xLAkwfVSE6MMSgyTNhPm90UOs__Mj2-jFwria-k32ZgdqE2w8zbItJNTewp09Nr_xVx6DEiIEG0hs9bJVRqaq/s1600/Succculent+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDH8hv-lq3CdaqKQ8yXOXD9LbxiP1ogpb9PlHxIxwhQpjCmXsKNDFAAd0xLAkwfVSE6MMSgyTNhPm90UOs__Mj2-jFwria-k32ZgdqE2w8zbItJNTewp09Nr_xVx6DEiIEG0hs9bJVRqaq/s640/Succculent+1.JPG" width="440" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I worked on them at the same time to keep the colour theme cohesive. I splattered the background with the paintings side by side which made the background process quicker....even though it took me 4 months to actually complete them. Let's face it, I'm really good at procrastinating! </span></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I now have them listed in my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/485130177/original-still-life-acrylic-painting?ref=shop_home_active_5" target="_blank">Etsy shop</a> in separate listings. As cute as they look all together I feel that they will most likely sell individually, although I'd be willing to give a deal to anyone that wants the whole set!</span></span><br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> This little fox was inspired by the colours of Autumn. I'm not a huge fan of Fall but natures colour pallet is pretty awesome this time of year.</span></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaA-dU7ImdWbNekwIchSZfdiPnVdRdEQozG7U7UoWZQf3ZJWUtGbZ2GiMh4T5C5D_LH86XvXRAPeiMxDwrCoHqtersQOVinfQNJhDIFLsl9q-p3Lzv5i5mm_RLqm3AoeqzjbPHaIAgGV-i/s1600/DSC_0877.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="462" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaA-dU7ImdWbNekwIchSZfdiPnVdRdEQozG7U7UoWZQf3ZJWUtGbZ2GiMh4T5C5D_LH86XvXRAPeiMxDwrCoHqtersQOVinfQNJhDIFLsl9q-p3Lzv5i5mm_RLqm3AoeqzjbPHaIAgGV-i/s640/DSC_0877.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I took the time to document my process along the way to show the different stages of mixed media that I used.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I used a variety of mediums for this painting to get the effects that I wanted. I started out with the background leaves using my favorite <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N00CMTO/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=racdyeart-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B01N00CMTO&linkId=dc61528495ecead4094b1b16aac4c313" target="_blank">Winsor & Newton watercolours.</a></span></span><br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">After a few layers of watercolour I used a sharpie pen to outline everything and clean up my corners. Then I pulled out my Faber Castell pencil crayons to really get into some detail.</span></span><br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This little painting started out as one of my daily pencil drawings. With all the negative events going on throughout the world this little mouse stayed in my mind as a hopeful image of peace and understanding. </span></span><br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">There seems to be a lot of hate being expressed throughout the world right now. Some people have legitimate reasons to be looking for justice while others are acting out and causing more hurt in the world because of their religions, beliefs and ideologies. Regardless of our political stances, religions and ideas I think we can all agree that we need a little more love in the world. </span></span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I documented my process for this painting. <span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I finished the mouse off with my Faber Castel pencil crayons so his fur would look softer and then used acrylic white paint for highlights and whiskers! </span></span><br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">This painting was dreamed up a few months ago but I finished it over the summer at my cabin. <span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">It's one of our stranger collaborations, but I kinda like it. I enjoy the odd pairings of life in this painting, which seem to be both reliant and independent of each other. It's always fun to paint some crazy idea from someone elses head!</span></span><br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This summer I spent almost every weekend sitting at my cabin <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">relaxing and observing</span> the forest and all the critters that enjoy it. <span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">This little project started a few months ago. Sebastian composed a mix of one of our favorite Kimbra songs and wanted me to put together a dance for a video project. The song is five minutes long so it took my most of the spring and summer to complete the dance and get it ready for filming. </span></span><br />
<iframe width="320" height="266" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/9yUaoWVVYvk/0.jpg" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/9yUaoWVVYvk?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe><span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">It's nice to take some time and focus on myself as a dancer. I spend so much of my studio time on my students and I am often too tired at the end of the day to take a personal dance moment. I wanted this particular dance to be technical...so it ended up being a full competition lyrical solo. Haha </span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">We spent two hot mornings in the studio working it all out. There are things I love about it and some things I will do differently next time! As I get back into the regular dance season I'm hoping I will find a little time to put together some more little dance projects. </span></span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1261671227112416247.post-45765234398934045852016-08-24T17:52:00.000-07:002016-08-24T17:52:52.734-07:00Drawings 41 - 46<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>

<span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Part of what has slowed me down in this drawing process is getting good photos. I waited a week to take all of my fish and duck photos in front of a lake! It is also time consuming getting all of my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/rachelledyer" target="_blank">Etsy</a> listing photos edited and uploaded. Basically the tech side of things is the most frustrating part of making art, but let's face it, I have nothing to really complain about. </span></span><br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I have decided to challenge myself this summer by making a small drawing every single day. <span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I'm taking it back to basics using only pencils and erasers and drawing small animals on 5" by 7" bristol paper. It has been sitting somewhat dormant for the last year and after selling a few books over Christmas it has looked exceptionally bare and boring. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I made a couple of larger decorated moleskine notebooks a few weeks ago but this week I got serious about it! </span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I decided to create a line of abstract watercolour covered moleskine notebooks to cheer up my shop. I used thick watercolour paper for the cover which makes it stronger and added the ribbon to prevent the pages from getting bent. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUArJQCminlENk4C-5T18kGUu81E0BKrqn9piVIi230ovj2larf4viTGI9HfLTWFdZq0awD6LyAb2F6iegNzN8tozDHPB_ABQEGmq3ry9QWWQhRhrgBrFAWJOArx4guRIG0mbBaKYW-gh9/s1600/_DSC2449.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="502" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUArJQCminlENk4C-5T18kGUu81E0BKrqn9piVIi230ovj2larf4viTGI9HfLTWFdZq0awD6LyAb2F6iegNzN8tozDHPB_ABQEGmq3ry9QWWQhRhrgBrFAWJOArx4guRIG0mbBaKYW-gh9/s640/_DSC2449.JPG" width="640" /></a>I personally love moleskine notebooks and use them to record my own creative thoughts. These covers were fun to create and are done in the style of some of my watercolour paintings. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">You can find these cute little notebooks at <b><a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/dasbuch?section_id=13102337" target="_blank">Das Buch</a></b> on Etsy! </span></span><br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;">When I'm feeling uninspired these days I often take
an instagram break to see what all of my favorite artists are working
on. Instagram has become the place to check out progress photos of
artists creating their current master pieces. I love seeing what's on
the easel or developing in their sketchbooks and it's a nice reminder
that every artist has a slightly different creative process. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: x-large;">Here are my five favorite female Instagram Artists! </span></div>

colour pallet and the looseness of her compositions. Her animals seem to

control over her medium is masterful and her instagram feed is full of
videos and progress photos.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I have been neglecting my bookmaking practice the last few months so I figured I would ease back into it with a few decorated moleskine notebooks. I have illustrated a few notebooks in this style and use them personally myself as an artistic/creative log. I find it to be very therapeutic to write about my paintings and how I feel about my creative process. </span></span><br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">These abstract notebooks are a great way to start a daily writing habit. I worked the paste/paint mix into the canvas with a stiff brush until there was a thin even coat. Tinting the the paste helps you see the thickness of the mixture across the canvas. <span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">In the next step I start playing with different colours, slowly adding in more and more detail. I also make a point of outlining my shadows and finding some highlights which also helps clean up my lines. </span></span><br />

I literally threw some white and gold paint onto the background (and on me.) After my Pollock moment I spent some time adding more colour and cleaning up unfortunate splatters until the paintings were complete. </span></span><br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I'm happy with my colour pallet on these two paintings. They look really cute together! </span></span><br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I started this painting in hope that it would cure me of my seasonal art funk. It was mostly unsuccessful and I am thoroughly disappointed with how this painting turned out. Regardless of my personal feelings I have put it in my Etsy shop and am happily moving on to other projects! </span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Some days I can sit down and paint something really cool with very little effort and then other days it seems to be an uphill battle. No matter how hard you try some paintings just don't work out the way you thought they would; and this is definitely one of them! I try not to let these emotional ups and down effect my productivity but the art I create while "in a funk" is generally not my best. I'm hoping that this little creative blip is almost over so I can tackle my larger paintings!</span></span><br />
