Friends of the Forest

https://www.etsy.com/listing/177821069/original-figurative-autumn-forest

The vision for this painting came to me while driving back from a much needed vacation at my cabin Thanksgiving weekend. The leaves on the trees were so vibrant and full of life, it was all I could do to keep my eyes on the road.
Since that weekend I have been carefully and methodically working on this painting. I had already sketched the girl in my sketchbook but decided to do a full sketchbook mock-up of the entire painting which I then painstakingly outlined in pen. Then I redrew it all on watercolour paper and started painting. I quickly became frustrated while painting little yellow leaves for what seemed like months.Well, since it took me 4 months to complete it I guess I did spend months painting those stupid little leaves. I am quite happy with the turnout though and glad that my hard work paid off!
Most of this painting is random but the little hedgehog in the center is my prickly friend Robert (who is actually a girl...long story.)
I have been taking more and more progress photos to show the progression of my art from the simple sketches to the finished product. I made this quick little video to show some of the steps!
This painting is also for sale in my Etsy shop!

Happy Birthday to Me!

My painting is on the cover of a quarterly poetry magazine!

I received my copy of Words Dance poetry magazine in the mail today and I can't wait to crack it open and read through it! It is beautifully printed and I may be just a little excited to see my painting on the front!

Time to go celebrate :)

To Sleep, Perchance To Dream

I generally work long and hard on my paintings, taking ample time in between each step to fully visualize the direction the artwork is headed. This quick painting was started and completed in about 4 hours (not in a row) with no preliminary sketches. The title was a prompt from sketchfest that I took past the 1 hour sketch time limit to become a quaint 8" by 10" mixed media piece. It feels so good to sit down and whip out a painting, although looking at it now there are many things I would change were I to do it again.

This painting is for sale in my Etsy shop :)
